Description

The Tamboerskloof Syrah 2019 is produced by Kleinood Wine Estate, a boutique property in the Blaauwklippen Valley on the southern edge of Stellenbosch. This small estate focuses on meticulous vineyard work and limited production wines that reflect their specific site.

 

Vineyards lie on north-facing slopes between roughly 176 and 198 metres above sea level, planted on diverse soils including Tukulu, Kroonstad, Klapmuts and Witfontein. These well-drained soils and the valley’s proximity to the ocean - around 18 km away - help moderate temperatures, allowing Syrah to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic lift.

 

At Kleinood, winemaking blends traditional techniques with modern precision. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted multiple times before fermentation, with gentle handling to preserve fruit purity. The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barrels (about 15% new oak), allowing structure and spice to develop while keeping the vineyard character front and centre.

 

Colour:
Bright, medium ruby with clear edges and youthful vibrancy.

 

Nose:
Floral violet aromas open first, followed by blackberry and bramble. Notes of cracked black pepper, liquorice and subtle spice add complexity.

 

Palate:
Medium-bodied and finely structured, with dark berry fruit layered over savoury spice. Fine-grained tannins give shape to the mid-palate while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and focused.

 

Finish:
Long and gently spicy, finishing with dark fruit, pepper and a savoury edge.
