Strandveld Grenache 2023
Grenache Noir
Description
At the southernmost vineyards on the African continent, Strandveld Vineyards crafts wines deeply influenced by wind, ocean, and rugged coastal terrain. Located near Elim in Cape Agulhas, the estate benefits from a cool maritime climate where slow ripening and naturally bright acidity help produce wines with freshness, detail, and balance rather than sheer weight.
The Strandveld name refers to the wild coastal landscape surrounding the vineyards - an environment of indigenous fynbos, sea air, limestone-rich soils, and strong Atlantic winds. These conditions shape a style that feels unmistakably regional: savoury, textured, and expressive without excess.
The Strandveld Grenache 2023 was produced in small quantities from mature vines, with a thoughtful, hands-on approach in the cellar. Half the fruit was fermented as whole bunches, adding aromatic lift and structure, while maturation in older French oak barrels allowed the purity of the fruit and terroir to remain the focus.
Colour:
Bright ruby red with a slightly deeper core, showing youthful intensity in the glass.
Nose:
Expressive and layered, with sour cherry, mulberry, wild strawberry and black cherry aromas leading the way. Subtle notes of liquorice, dried herbs and coastal fynbos add savoury complexity beneath the fruit.
Palate:
Juicy and textured, with dark berry fruit carried by fresh acidity and fine, mouth-watering tannins. The cooler Elim climate gives the wine energy and precision, while restrained oak adds gentle spice and structure without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Long, savoury and quietly persistent, leaving lingering notes of red berries, herbs and subtle spice.

Strandveld Grenache 2023
- Food Pairing : The savoury edge and bright acidity of the Strandveld Grenache 2023 make it particularly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, grilled pork chops, braaied game meat, or a rich beef stew, where the wine’s freshness cuts through the richness of the dish while its herbal notes complement smoky, charred flavours. It also works well with mushroom risotto or mature hard cheeses, where the wine’s earthy complexity and fine tannins come into focus.
