Stony Brook Cabernet Franc 2020
Cabernet Franc
Description
Tucked beneath the slopes of the Dutoitskop mountains in Franschhoek, Stony Brook Vineyards is a small family-run estate known for producing limited-release wines with a strong sense of place. Since purchasing the property in the mid-1990s, the McNaught family has steadily built a reputation for wines that favour structure, balance and site expression over sheer power.
The Stony Brook Cabernet Franc 2020 is grown on elevated vineyards where cool mountain air helps preserve freshness and aromatic detail. Winemaker Craig McNaught follows a measured, traditional approach in the cellar, with hand-harvesting, careful sorting, gentle extraction and maturation in older French oak barrels to avoid masking the varietal character. Wild malolactic fermentation and extended ageing contribute texture and complexity, while the wine’s overall style remains focused on purity and finesse rather than excessive oak or ripeness.
Colour:
Deep crimson with a vibrant ruby edge and excellent clarity in the glass.
Nose:
Lifted aromas of red pepper, black cherry and dark plum lead into layers of Cape fynbos, dried herbs and dark chocolate. Subtle earthy notes and gentle oak spice add depth without overpowering the fruit.
Palate:
Bright and focused on entry, developing into a concentrated palate with fine tannins and savoury detail. Dark berry fruit and black cherry flavours are balanced by fresh acidity and a lightly herbal edge typical of Cabernet Franc. The texture is firm but polished, giving the wine structure without heaviness.
Finish:
Long, dry and refined, with lingering notes of spice, dark fruit and savoury herbs.

Stony Brook Cabernet Franc 2020
- Food Pairing : Stony Brook Cabernet Franc 2020 pairs particularly well with food that mirrors its savoury, herbal character and firm structure. Grilled lamb chops or rosemary-crusted rack of lamb work beautifully with the wine’s tannins and dark fruit profile, while slow-cooked beef short rib brings out its earthy depth and spice. The wine’s freshness also makes it well suited to mushroom ravioli, roasted aubergine or smoky chorizo dishes, where the acidity and herbal notes help keep richer flavours balanced and composed.
