Stellenrust Secrets & Lies Chenin 2023 (Top 10)
Chenin Blanc
Description
At the heart of this wine is Stellenrust, a family-run estate in Stellenbosch that’s long been part of South Africa’s viticultural fabric. The vineyards for Secrets & Lies sit in the cool, wind-touched Bottelary Hills on decomposed granite soils, where older Chenin Blanc vines (often 40+ years old) yield concentrated fruit. This terroir - morning sun, cooling breezes and well-drained soils - gives bright acidity and mineral lift to the wines, while a measured use of older French oak barrels and lees contact adds texture without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a Chenin Blanc that’s expressive of place and thoughtfully balanced between freshness and complexity.
Colour: Pale golden yellow, with gentle green hues that reflect freshness and youthful energy.
Nose: Ripe yellow fruit leads - think pear, quince and yellow apple - layered with subtle floral signatures and a hint of citrus zest. Secondary nuances of gentle spice and delicate minerality add complexity without detracting from the pure fruit expression.
Palate: Medium-bodied with vivid acidity that gives life and clarity. Yellow fruit carries through, joined by a hint of lemon and a mineral backbone. The texture is smooth, with a fine line of creaminess from lees ageing and very light oak influence that supports rather than dominates.
Finish: Clean, lingering and elegant - fruit flavours taper into a mineral-tinged close with a touch of citrus peel and honeyed warmth.

Stellenrust Secrets & Lies Chenin 2023 (Top 10)
- Food Pairing : Stellenrust Secrets & Lies Chenin 2023 adapts beautifully to a range of dishes because of its vibrant acidity and layered fruit profile. Try it with grilled line fish or hake in a lemon butter sauce - the zesty acidity cuts through richness and echoes the wine’s citrus notes. It also stands up to creamy pasta with garden herbs or shellfish linguine, where texture and subtle spice sing alongside the wine’s mid-palate depth. For a contrast, pair with a mildly spiced chicken tagine; the Chenin’s brightness keeps the flavours lively without clashing. In each case, the wine’s balance of freshness and texture supports both simpler everyday plates and more composed seasonal dishes.
