Stellenbosch Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Stellenbosch Reserve is a collaborative range produced by the team behind Rust en Vrede Estate, under the direction of Jean Engelbrecht. The wines are crafted by the same cellar and winemaking team responsible for one of Stellenbosch’s most respected Cabernet-focused estates, bringing a strong sense of pedigree and stylistic consistency to the range.
Rather than representing a single farm, Stellenbosch Reserve is designed to showcase the broader character of Stellenbosch. Fruit is sourced from carefully selected vineyard sites across the region - including areas such as Polkadraai and Simonsberg - each contributing different elements of structure, fruit profile, and freshness.
The Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, labelled “Ou Hoofgebou” after a historic Stellenbosch landmark, reflects a classic approach: varietal clarity, firm but balanced tannins, and restrained oak influence. It’s a wine rooted in place, shaped by blending across sites and guided by a team with a deep understanding of Stellenbosch Cabernet.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful, vibrant edge.
Nose:
Blackcurrant and dark cherry lead, followed by notes of dark chocolate, cedar, and a touch of tobacco. Subtle hints of roasted herbs and graphite add complexity.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a structured core. Ripe black fruit sits at the centre, supported by firm, well-defined tannins and balanced acidity. Layers of plum, mulberry, and savoury spice develop as the wine opens.
Finish:
Dry and persistent, with lingering cassis, gentle oak spice, and a fine tannic grip.

Stellenbosch Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
- Food Pairing : Stellenbosch Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 pairs naturally with dishes that match its structure and depth. Grilled or braaied beef works particularly well, as the wine’s tannins cut through the richness while echoing smoky flavours. A slow-cooked lamb shank or venison dish brings out its darker fruit and savoury notes, while something like a beef lasagne or mushroom-based dish complements its balance of fruit and earthiness. The wine’s firm structure and freshness also make it a good partner for aged cheeses, where richness and intensity are well matched.
