Springfield Wild Yeast Chardonnay 2024
Chardonnay
Description
Nestled in the Robertson Valley, Springfield Estate is a family-owned farm run by siblings Abrie and Jeanette Bruwer, descendants of French Huguenot settlers who first planted vines in the region centuries ago. Robertson's combination of limestone-rich soils, warm days and cool nights creates ideal conditions for Chardonnay, allowing fruit to ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure.
Â
Springfield has built its reputation on a philosophy of minimal intervention and authenticity. Working under the estate's long-standing motto, "Made on Honour", the team relies on traditional techniques and natural processes wherever possible. The Wild Yeast Chardonnay is fermented entirely with naturally occurring vineyard yeasts and sees no oak influence, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to take centre stage. The result is a Chardonnay that reflects both place and philosophy with clarity and restraint.
Â
Colour:
Bright straw yellow with youthful clarity and subtle green reflections.
Â
Nose:
Fresh citrus, green apple and pear lead the aromatics, followed by hints of pineapple, wet stone and a delicate mineral edge. As the wine opens, subtle savoury notes add further interest.
Â
Palate:
Focused and energetic, with flavours of lemon, crisp orchard fruit and a distinct mineral character. The texture is rounded by natural malolactic fermentation, yet the wine remains taut and refreshing thanks to its lively acidity. With no oak influence, the fruit and site remain firmly in the spotlight.
Â
Finish:
Long, dry and precise, leaving lingering notes of citrus zest, stone fruit and minerality.
