Springfield Methode Ancienne Chardonnay 2021
Chardonnay
Description
Located in the limestone-rich Robertson Valley, Springfield Estate is a family-owned winery run by the Bruwer family, whose roots in the region trace back to the French Huguenots. The combination of warm sunny days, cool evenings and calcareous soils creates ideal conditions for producing Chardonnay with both richness and freshness.
Â
The estate's philosophy, "Made on Honour", centres on minimal intervention and allowing nature to guide the winemaking process wherever possible. The Méthode Ancienne Chardonnay is one of Springfield's flagship wines and takes its name from the traditional approach used in its production. Fermented with naturally occurring wild yeasts and matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, the wine develops slowly and naturally, resulting in a Chardonnay that balances fruit purity with depth and complexity.
Â
Colour:
Bright golden straw with brilliant clarity and youthful vibrancy.
Â
Nose:
A layered bouquet of ripe pineapple, peach and citrus is complemented by notes of toasted almonds, vanilla, buttered brioche and subtle flinty minerality. As the wine opens, additional nuances of honey and spice emerge.
Â
Palate:
Full-bodied and textured, with concentrated flavours of stone fruit, lemon curd and baked apple. The oak is seamlessly integrated, adding creaminess and complexity without dominating the fruit. Fresh acidity provides balance and lift, creating a wine that feels both generous and focused.
Â
Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering notes of citrus, toasted nuts, gentle spice and mineral freshness.
