Spier Wine Farm, one of South Africa’s oldest working wineries dating back to 1692, sits in Stellenbosch with vineyards extending into the broader Coastal Region. The Creative Block range reflects Spier’s commitment to blending artistry with terroir - each wine named for the number of components used, much like a carefully composed piece of work.
The Creative Block 2 2024 is shaped by vineyards planted in decomposed granite and shale soils, located close enough to the Atlantic Ocean to benefit from cooling maritime breezes. This proximity slows ripening, helping preserve acidity while allowing flavour intensity to build steadily.
Winemaking is precise but restrained: early morning harvesting to retain freshness, cool fermentation in stainless steel, and a small portion of Sémillon fermented in French oak to add texture. A short period on the lees enhances mouthfeel without compromising the wine’s clean, expressive style.
Colour:
Pale straw with a subtle green-tinged edge, indicating freshness and youth.
Nose:
Gooseberry and lime lead, followed by white peach and hints of citrus. Subtle fynbos and a light floral lift add a distinctly Cape nuance.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a crisp, focused structure. Flavours of passion fruit, citrus and blackcurrant leaf are supported by bright acidity. A gentle texture from the Sémillon component adds roundness without softening the wine’s linear profile.
