Simonsig Tiara 2020
Bordeaux Blend
Description
Simonsig Wine Estate, situated at the foot of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa’s most established family-owned wineries. Founded by Frans Malan in 1968, the estate played a significant role in shaping modern South African wine, including producing the country’s first Méthode Cap Classique. Today, Simonsig remains recognised for wines that combine consistency, approachability and classical structure.
Tiara represents the estate’s flagship Bordeaux-style blend and is produced only in vintages where the fruit meets the required standard. Vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils along the Simonsberg slopes benefit from cooling maritime influence and significant day-night temperature variation, helping preserve freshness and aromatic detail alongside ripe fruit concentration.
The 2020 vintage was matured for approximately 20 months in French oak barrels, allowing the individual varietals to integrate slowly while retaining the estate’s hallmark balance between richness and elegance.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense garnet core.
Nose:
Blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry aromas lead the nose, followed by layers of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and subtle baking spice from oak maturation.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet composed, with concentrated dark berry fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and longevity, while Merlot adds plush texture through the mid-palate. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc contribute savoury complexity and aromatic lift. The oak is well integrated, adding depth without overshadowing the fruit.
Finish:
Long and refined, with lingering cassis, cedar, dark chocolate and gentle spice.

Simonsig Tiara 2020
- Food Pairing : Simonsig Tiara 2020 pairs beautifully with richly flavoured red meat dishes and slow-cooked comfort food. Roast lamb, beef fillet, oxtail or venison pie all complement the wine’s layered fruit and polished tannin structure particularly well. The savoury cedar and tobacco notes also work naturally alongside charcoal-grilled flavours, rosemary and earthy mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses such as aged cheddar or Gruyère make excellent pairings as the wine develops further in bottle.
