Simonsig The Garland Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Simonsig Family Vineyards, located on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, is one of the Cape’s most historically significant estates. Founded by the Malan family in 1968, the estate helped pioneer several key developments in South African wine, including the country’s first Cap Classique. Today, third-generation cellar master Michael Malan continues the family’s focus on wines that reflect both heritage and site.
The Garland Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship Cabernet of the estate and is produced from a single vineyard planted on weathered granite soils high on the Simonsberg slopes. The elevation and well-drained soils encourage small berries and concentrated fruit, while cooling breezes help maintain freshness and structure. Careful vineyard selection and extended maturation in French oak allow the wine to develop depth and complexity while preserving the clarity of Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon.
Colour:
Deep crimson with a dense ruby core, showing excellent concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Complex aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and cassis lead the bouquet. These are layered with graphite, cigar box and cocoa, alongside subtle savoury hints of cured meat and mineral notes.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured with a firm core of dark fruit. The texture is powerful yet refined, with fine, powdery tannins supporting flavours of blackcurrant, plum and dark chocolate. Fresh acidity lifts the richness, keeping the wine focused and precise.
Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering notes of cassis, savoury spice and cocoa.

- Food Pairing : The structure and depth of Simonsig The Garland Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 make it well suited to rich, flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled ribeye or slow-roasted beef, where the wine’s firm tannins complement the richness of the meat. Roast lamb with garlic and rosemary also works beautifully, echoing the wine’s savoury and herbal undertones. For something equally satisfying, a hearty beef stew or aged hard cheeses such as mature cheddar or Comté bring out the wine’s dark fruit depth and long, structured finish.
