Simonsig The Garland Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Simonsig Family Vineyards, established in Stellenbosch and rooted in the Malan family legacy since 1942, sits on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain - one of the Cape’s most respected sites for Cabernet Sauvignon. Here, elevated vineyards on ancient, decomposed granite soils produce wines with natural structure, concentration, and ageing potential.
The Garland is Simonsig’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, made from a single vineyard high on the Simonsberg. Meticulous vineyard selection, hand-harvesting, and extended maturation in new French oak (around 20 months) reflect a classical, Bordeaux-influenced approach, while the purity of fruit and precision keep it distinctly Stellenbosch.
Colour:
Deep, dark crimson with a dense, youthful core.
Nose:
Blackcurrant and mulberry lead, layered with baking spice, cedar, and a subtle cigar box note. Hints of graphite and earth add complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet composed, with fine-grained tannins that frame concentrated cassis and dark berry fruit. Spice, oak, and a touch of savoury earthiness build through the mid-palate, showing both power and restraint.
Finish:
Long and structured, tapering into lingering spice, dark fruit, and a refined, slightly earthy note.

- Food Pairing : Simonsig The Garland Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is built for rich, structured dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye or a classic South African braai steak, where the tannins bind with the fat and enhance the meat’s depth. Slow-braised short ribs or oxtail work equally well, allowing the wine’s layered fruit and spice to mirror the dish’s richness. For a more refined pairing, try it with mushroom risotto or aged cheeses - both bring out the wine’s earthy complexity while complementing its long, savoury finish.
