Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2019
Cap Classique
Description
At the heart of South Africa’s sparkling wine story stands Simonsig Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch region - the birthplace of Kaapse Vonkel, the country’s first traditional-method sparkling wine launched by Frans Malan in 1971. The estate’s Cap Classique range honours this legacy, combining classic Champagne varietals with Cape terroir finesse. Grapes are hand-picked and gently pressed to capture pure juice, with fermentation in stainless steel and a portion of Chardonnay in older French oak for added complexity. After secondary bottle fermentation and extended lees aging, this wine expresses both heritage and precision, balancing freshness with layered fruit and subtle autolytic character.
Colour: Pale golden straw with a fine, persistent mousse that signals lively effervescence and clarity.
Nose: Crisp aromas of fresh apple, white peach and citrus blossom lead, joined by delicate hints of ripe pear and subtle brioche-like complexity from bottle aging.
Palate: The palate is vibrant and refined, driven by vibrant lemon and orchard fruit with gentle stone fruit accents. Clean acidity gives structure while a gentle yeasty note adds elegance without heaviness.
Finish: Long and refreshing, with lingering citrus and light mineral tones that underline the wine’s finesse and balance.
