Shannon RocknRolla Pinot Noir 2022
Pinot Noir
Description
Shannon Vineyards lies in the cool, elevated Elgin Valley, a region widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most promising sites for Pinot Noir. The vineyards sit high on the slopes where ocean-cooled air and significant diurnal temperature shifts allow grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and aromatic detail.
The Shannon RocknRolla Pinot Noir 2022 comes from one of the estate’s oldest Pinot Noir plantings, established in 2000 and planted with classic Dijon clones. The vineyards grow on a mix of Bokkeveld shale, clay and quartz-rich sandstone soils, which contribute structure and mineral nuance to the wines.
In the cellar, the approach balances careful precision with minimal interference. Grapes are chilled before sorting, with a period of cold maceration to extract colour and flavour gently. Fermentation combines cultured and wild yeasts, after which the wine undergoes maturation in French oak barriques. The result is a Pinot Noir that reflects Elgin’s cool-climate clarity while maintaining depth and structure.
Colour:
Bright ruby with a translucent edge, typical of cool-climate Pinot Noir.
Nose:
Fragrant aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry lead the bouquet, followed by subtle notes of rose petal, dried herbs, orange peel and gentle oak spice.
Palate:
The palate is supple and layered, with red berry fruit supported by lively acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Hints of savoury spice and earthy undertones add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Finish:
Long and composed, leaving lingering impressions of cherry, spice and a light mineral freshness.

- Food Pairing : The freshness and fine tannin structure of Shannon RocknRolla Pinot Noir 2022 make it particularly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast duck or crispy duck pancakes, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the richness while echoing the savoury flavours.
