Saxenburg Diamond Hill Syrah 2023
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Saxenburg Wine Estate lies in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch, an area increasingly recognised for producing expressive Syrah with both ripeness and natural freshness. The vineyards benefit from cooling maritime breezes moving inland from False Bay, helping preserve acidity and aromatic detail while allowing slow, even ripening.
The Diamond Hill range focuses on site-specific wines that reflect the estate’s varied soils and hillside vineyards. For the 2023 Syrah, careful canopy management and selective harvesting were used to retain balance and purity of fruit. Fermentation included a measured portion of whole bunches to build savoury complexity and structure, while maturation in French oak added texture and spice without dominating the wine. The overall style leans toward restraint and elegance rather than overt richness.
Colour:
Deep ruby with vibrant purple edges.
Nose:
Blackberry, plum and dark cherry aromas lead the nose, followed by cracked black pepper, violets and subtle smoked meat notes. Hints of olive tapenade and warm spice add complexity beneath the fruit.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, with juicy dark berry fruit supported by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The palate carries classic Syrah notes of black pepper and savoury spice, balanced by floral lift and restrained oak influence. The texture is polished but energetic, allowing the wine to feel layered without becoming heavy.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering notes of black fruit, white pepper and gentle oak spice.

Saxenburg Diamond Hill Syrah 2023
- Food Pairing : Saxenburg Diamond Hill Syrah 2023 pairs particularly well with grilled and slow-cooked dishes where savoury flavours can complement the wine’s peppery structure. Lamb chops, beef short rib or smoky braai dishes work naturally alongside its dark fruit and spice profile, while duck or chargrilled aubergine bring out the wine’s more floral and earthy notes. The fresh acidity also makes it versatile with richer tomato-based dishes, mushroom risotto or mature cheeses, allowing the wine to refresh the palate while maintaining depth and structure.
