Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2022
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Rust en Vrede is a historic estate on the lower slopes of the Helderberg Mountain near Stellenbosch, known for its dedication to red wines that reflect both power and finesse. The estate’s Syrah vineyards are planted on north-facing slopes in well-drained Tukula soils of decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone, benefiting from warm, dry Mediterranean conditions that promote thorough ripening of this late-season variety. Hand-picked fruit is fermented with daily manual punch-downs and pump-overs before extended maturation in predominantly seasoned French oak barrels, resulting in a wine that balances intensity and elegance while showcasing the distinctive Stellenbosch terroir.
Colour: Deep, intense ruby - a sign of ripe fruit concentration.
Nose: Aromas of juicy black cherry and blueberry lead, followed by violet perfume and savoury nuances of leather, sandalwood and warm nutmeg spice.
Palate: Elegant and structured, with ripe, refined tannins supporting intense black fruit flavours. Complex spice notes - black pepper, cinnamon, paprika - combine with savoury cured-meat hints for depth and poise.
Finish: A lingering black cherry finish where fruit and spice echo, delivering a refined yet expressive end.

Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2022
- Food Pairing : This Syrah’s layered black fruit and spice profile pairs beautifully with rich, savoury fare. Think herb-crusted lamb shank, where pepper and dark fruit complement the meat’s juiciness, or grilled venison with a berry jus, which echoes the wine’s earthy tannins and spice. A slow-braised beef brisket with root vegetables will match its structure, while a dish like wild mushroom and rosemary risotto highlights the wine’s herbaceous and savoury complexity.
- Drink before: Enjoy now through around 2032; tannic structure and vibrant fruit support medium-term ageing.
