Rascallion 33 1/3 RPM Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023
Chenin Blanc
Description
Rascallion Wines, founded by Ross Sleet in partnership with Wellington Wines, is a Western Cape négociant brand built around sourcing quality fruit from established vineyard sites. The 33 1/3 RPM Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023 draws specifically from certified old bush vines in Wellington, some planted as far back as the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Wellington’s warm days and cooling evening conditions allow Chenin Blanc to ripen fully while retaining structure, particularly in older, low-yielding vineyards. In the cellar, this wine is handled in multiple components - including stainless steel, barrel fermentation and a portion with skin contact - before blending. This layered approach builds texture and complexity, giving the wine a more Rhône-inspired, structured style while still retaining a distinctly South African fruit profile.
Colour:
Pale gold with a slight green edge, bright and youthful.
Nose:
Aromatic and layered, showing lemon and lime, white peach and pear, with hints of elderflower, mandarin and a soft floral lift.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a textured, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Flavours of citrus, stone fruit and subtle tropical notes are balanced by fresh acidity, while gentle lees influence adds depth without heaviness.
Finish:
Long and fresh, with lingering lemon zest, soft stone fruit and a faint waxy, lanolin note typical of Chenin Blanc.

- Food Pairing : Rascallion 33 1/3 RPM Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023 pairs well with dishes that match its texture and freshness. Roast chicken or pork with a light glaze works particularly well, as the wine’s acidity cuts through richness while its fruit complements savoury flavours. It’s equally suited to Cape Malay-style dishes or mildly spiced curries, where its layered profile softens spice without losing clarity. For lighter options, try it with grilled fish or a creamy pasta - the balance of freshness and weight makes it versatile across a range of everyday meals.
