Raka Erica Shiraz 2016
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Raka Wines, situated near Stanford in the Klein River Ward of Walker Bay, is shaped by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the strong coastal winds that sweep through the vineyards. This maritime influence helps moderate ripening, preserving freshness while allowing for slow flavour development in the grapes.
Founded by former international fisherman Piet Dreyer, the estate reflects a hands-on, practical philosophy where vineyard work and careful cellar decisions go hand in hand. Shiraz thrives here on well-drained soils, producing fruit with natural balance rather than excess weight. The Erica range, named after the fynbos that grows wild across the farm, captures a more refined expression of the varietal, typically matured in oak to add structure and subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a slightly garnet rim, showing early signs of maturation.
Nose:
Ripe blackberries and plum lead, followed by hints of white pepper, dried herbs, and a touch of smoky oak. Subtle notes of leather and spice develop with time in the glass.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a smooth, rounded texture. Dark fruit carries through from the nose, supported by fine-grained tannins and a gentle acidity that keeps the wine poised. Layers of spice and savoury notes add interest without dominating the fruit.
Finish:
Moderately long, with lingering dark fruit and a soft peppery edge.

Raka Erica Shiraz 2016
- Food Pairing : The Raka Erica Shiraz 2016 pairs well with dishes that echo its balance of fruit and savoury spice. Grilled Karoo lamb chops work beautifully, as the wine’s tannins complement the richness of the meat while its peppery notes enhance the seasoning. A slow-cooked beef stew or oxtail brings out the wine’s deeper, more savoury layers, while something like chargrilled aubergine or mushroom-based dishes offers a good match for its earthy undertones. Even a well-made boerewors roll with caramelised onions finds a natural partner here, thanks to the wine’s approachable structure and gentle spice.
