Quoin Rock Red 2020 (Diners)
Bordeaux Blend
Description
Quoin Rock Wine Estate sits on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, an area widely recognised for producing structured, Cabernet-led red wines. The vineyards benefit from decomposed granite soils and cooling ocean influences that slow ripening and help preserve freshness in the fruit. This balance between warm sunshine and maritime moderation allows grapes to develop depth while maintaining natural acidity.
Following a major revitalisation of the estate in the past decade, Quoin Rock has focused on careful vineyard selection and precise cellar work. The Quoin Rock Red Blend reflects this approach, drawing on classic Bordeaux varieties grown on the estate. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in small batches before maturation in French oak barrels, allowing the final blend to integrate structure, fruit purity and subtle oak influence.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple edge, indicating both concentration and careful extraction.
Nose:
Aromatic notes of cassis, black cherry and ripe plum lead the bouquet, followed by cedar, graphite and subtle spice from oak ageing. Gentle hints of dried herbs and dark chocolate add further complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied with a firm but refined structure. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone, delivering blackcurrant fruit and structured tannins, while supporting varieties add softness and aromatic detail. The wine shows good concentration, balanced acidity and a smooth, polished texture.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering notes of dark fruit, cedar and a touch of spice carried by fine tannins.

- Food Pairing : The structure and depth of the Quoin Rock Red Blend 2020 make it a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled lamb chops or rosemary-crusted lamb, where the wine’s firm tannins balance the richness of the meat. A slow-cooked beef stew or oxtail potjie also complements the wine’s dark fruit and savoury notes. For a lighter option, try it with a chargrilled steak or a mushroom-based dish such as porcini risotto, where the earthy flavours mirror the wine’s subtle savoury complexity.
