Protea Merlot 2023
Merlot
Description
Protea is the modern, accessibly styled range from Anthonij Rupert Wyne, created for relaxed, everyday drinking without losing a sense of place. Grapes for Protea Merlot 2023 are sourced from selected vineyards across the Western Cape, where varied soils and aspects allow the team to blend ripe fruit, gentle structure and freshness. In the cellar, the focus is on clean, fruit-forward winemaking: temperature-controlled fermentation, gentle extraction and measured use of oak to keep tannins soft and the wine easy to enjoy. It’s a straightforward, well-made Cape Merlot that’s designed to be versatile at the table and approachable from the first glass.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, purple-tinged rim and good clarity.
Nose:
Ripe plum and dark cherry lead the aromas, backed by blackberry, a hint of redcurrant and subtle notes of vanilla, mocha and soft spice.
Palate:
Medium bodied with smooth, rounded tannins and a juicy core of dark plum, cherry and a touch of mulberry. The acidity is moderate, keeping the wine lively without sharpness, while gentle oak influence adds hints of chocolate and baking spice. The overall impression is supple and easy-drinking rather than heavy or firm.
Finish:
Medium in length, with lingering ripe plum, soft spice and a faint chocolatey note.

- Food Pairing : Protea Merlot 2023 is a flexible partner for relaxed, everyday meals. Its soft tannins and ripe fruit make it a natural fit with dishes like spaghetti bolognese, cottage pie or beef lasagne, where the wine’s gentle structure matches the richness of the sauce. It’s just as comfortable alongside roast chicken, pork chops or boerewors from the braai. For a meat-free option, try mushroom risotto, roasted butternut and feta bake or a margherita or pepperoni-and-mushroom pizza – the wine’s savoury fruit and subtle chocolate notes complement roasted, umami-rich flavours without overwhelming them.
