The Protea range forms part of Anthonij Rupert Wines, based in the Franschhoek Valley but sourcing fruit across the Western Cape. This broader regional approach allows the winemaking team to draw on a diversity of climates - from cooler coastal influences to warmer inland pockets - helping to preserve freshness while achieving full flavour ripeness.
The philosophy behind Protea is focused on producing expressive, accessible wines that reflect the Cape’s natural character without excessive intervention. For the Protea Chardonnay 2025, the emphasis is on fruit purity and balance, with minimal or no oak influence. The result is a clean, modern Chardonnay style that prioritises drinkability and clarity over weight or complexity.
Colour:
Bright pale straw with a subtle green tint, indicating a youthful, fresh wine.
Nose:
Aromas of crisp green apple, ripe pear and citrus peel lead, followed by softer notes of white peach and melon. There is a light floral lift and a clean, gently mineral nuance.
Palate:
Light- to medium-bodied with a smooth, approachable texture. Flavours of apple, lemon and stone fruit are supported by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively without being sharp. The restrained use of oak (or absence thereof) allows the fruit to remain the focus, with a gentle roundness through the mid-palate.
Finish:
Moderate in length, finishing on citrus and orchard fruit with a clean, dry impression.
