Protea Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
The Protea Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 forms part of the Protea range produced by the Anthonij Rupert Wines group, whose vineyards and cellars are based in Franschhoek. The Protea label celebrates South Africa’s national flower while offering accessible, well-made wines that reflect the character of the Cape’s diverse vineyards.
Fruit for the wine is sourced from carefully selected vineyard sites across the Western Cape, where warm sunny days and cooling coastal influences help Cabernet Sauvignon develop ripe fruit while retaining freshness. The aim of the Protea range is to balance approachability with structure, allowing the varietal character to shine without heavy oak or excessive extraction.
In the cellar, fermentation takes place in stainless steel before the wine spends time maturing in older French oak barrels. This approach softens the tannins and adds subtle spice while keeping the wine fruit-driven and easy to enjoy. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon that highlights the classic dark fruit profile of the grape in a smooth, everyday style.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with youthful purple edges.
Nose:
Aromas of ripe black cherry and berry fruit lead the nose, followed by hints of fruitcake, gentle floral notes and soft spice. Subtle cedar and oak nuances add depth.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with succulent flavours of blackberry and black cherry. The texture is rounded and smooth, supported by soft tannins and balanced acidity. Subtle oak influence introduces hints of spice and cedar while allowing the fruit to remain the focus.
Finish:
Comfortably long and poised, leaving lingering dark berry fruit with a gentle touch of spice and oak.

Protea Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
- Food Pairing : The fruit-forward style and smooth tannins of Protea Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 make it a versatile partner for relaxed, everyday meals. It pairs naturally with grilled beef burgers or steak from the braai, where the wine’s dark fruit and gentle oak complement the charred flavours of the meat. A hearty beef lasagne or tomato-based pasta dish also works well, as the wine’s acidity balances the richness of the sauce. For something simpler, mature cheddar or a platter of biltong and cured meats brings out the wine’s savoury edge while keeping the pairing comfortably informal.
