Penderyn Peated
Whisky : Other
Description
Penderyn Distillery, situated in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park, helped revive Welsh whisky production after more than a century of dormancy. Since opening in 2000, the distillery has become known for producing elegant, fruit-forward whiskies using its distinctive Faraday still, which creates a particularly clean and refined spirit character.
Penderyn Peated offers a different interpretation of smoky whisky compared to the heavier maritime styles often associated with Islay. Matured initially in ex-bourbon barrels before finishing in ex-peated casks, the whisky combines Penderyn’s naturally bright, fruity house style with layers of soft smoke and spice. Rather than dominating the palate, the peat influence is integrated carefully, allowing freshness and balance to remain central to the whisky’s character.
Bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, the whisky retains texture and aromatic complexity while showcasing a more contemporary, approachable style of peated single malt.
Colour:
Bright gold with warm amber reflections.
Nose:
Soft wood smoke and toasted barley lead the nose, followed by aromas of citrus peel, vanilla, green apple and honey. Subtle earthy notes and spice emerge with time in the glass.
Palate:
Smooth and medium-bodied, with flavours of caramel, orchard fruit and creamy malt balanced by gentle peat smoke. The smoke remains elegant and controlled rather than medicinal, while notes of pepper, oak spice and toasted nuts add depth and structure.
Finish:
Long and warming, with lingering smoke, vanilla sweetness and soft spice.

Penderyn Peated
- Food Pairing : Penderyn Peated pairs particularly well with smoky, savoury dishes and richer comfort food. Braaied lamb chops, smoked brisket, chargrilled mushrooms or mature cheddar all complement the whisky’s gentle peat character beautifully. The citrus freshness and balanced smoke also work well with smoked salmon, barbecue glazes and dark chocolate desserts, where the whisky’s sweetness and spice can add further depth without overwhelming the pairing.
