Opstal Bergsteen Chenin Blanc 2023
Chenin Blanc
Description
Opstal Estate is situated in the Slanghoek Valley within the Breedekloof region, an area known for its dramatic mountain surroundings and varied soils of sandstone, shale and clay. The Bergsteen Chenin Blanc 2023 comes from a single vineyard planted in 2006 at around 365 metres above sea level - the highest site on the farm - where altitude and exposure contribute to slower ripening and concentrated flavour.
This wine forms part of Opstal’s Single Site range, which focuses on expressing the individuality of specific vineyards rather than blending across sites. In the cellar, the approach is measured and detail-driven: fermentation is followed by maturation in older oak for around 10 months, allowing texture and complexity to develop without overt wood influence.
The result is a Chenin Blanc that balances site-driven concentration with restraint, showing both precision and a subtle, savoury depth typical of the Breedekloof.
Colour:
Pale straw with a bright, clear rim and a slight golden hue.
Nose:
Subtle and refined, showing pear, peach and green apple, alongside delicate floral notes and a faint powdery, mineral character.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a gently textured mouthfeel. Flavours of stone fruit and citrus are supported by fresh, well-defined acidity. The time in older oak adds a soft, rounded edge without masking the fruit, while a slight grip and savoury nuance bring structure and depth.
Finish:
Dry and focused, with a lightly pithy, mineral finish that lingers.
