Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2022 (Diners)
Pinot Noir
Description
The Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2022 is produced by De Grendel Wines, using grapes grown on the dramatic Ceres Plateau in the Western Cape. Sitting around 960 metres above sea level, this remote farming region is one of South Africa’s highest wine-growing areas, where cold winters, cool summers and significant day–night temperature swings create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir.
While De Grendel Wines is based on the slopes of Tygerberg outside Durbanville, the winery sources fruit from this elevated site to capture the precision and freshness that altitude can bring to delicate varieties. The plateau’s shale-rich soils and slow ripening season allow flavours to develop gradually, preserving acidity and aromatic detail.
In the cellar, the approach focuses on restraint and clarity of fruit. Gentle handling during fermentation and careful oak maturation aim to enhance structure without overshadowing the natural character of the grapes. The result is a Pinot Noir that reflects both the cool mountain terroir of the Ceres Plateau and the refined winemaking style of De Grendel.
Colour:
Bright ruby red with a translucent rim, typical of a cool-climate Pinot Noir.
Nose:
Red cherry and wild strawberry lead the aromatics, followed by cranberry, rose petal and subtle earthy notes. Hints of spice and delicate oak add complexity without dominating the fruit.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a silky, refined texture. Flavours of cherry, raspberry and pomegranate unfold across the palate, supported by fresh natural acidity and fine, powdery tannins. The wine shows poise and purity rather than weight.
Finish:
Lingering and clean, leaving impressions of red berries, gentle spice and a faint savoury note.

- Food Pairing : The elegance and bright acidity of Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2022 from De Grendel Wines make it a natural partner for dishes that balance richness with freshness. Roast duck with a cherry reduction highlights the wine’s red fruit character, while grilled salmon or tuna works beautifully with its silky texture and subtle savoury notes. It also pairs well with herb-roasted chicken, mushroom risotto or a wild mushroom tart - dishes where the wine’s earthiness and gentle tannin structure complement the umami flavours without overwhelming them.
