Old Road 12 Mile Syrah 2022
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Old Road Wine Company is based in Franschhoek, where winemaker Pieter Ferreira focuses on crafting wines that highlight site, variety and balance rather than heavy cellar manipulation. The philosophy is rooted in a more restrained, contemporary Cape style - wines that show freshness, structure and a clear sense of origin.
The fruit for Old Road 12 Mile Syrah 2022 comes from carefully selected vineyards planted on weathered shale soils, where mature vines produce fruit with natural concentration and spice. The region’s warm days encourage ripeness, while cooling winds help maintain freshness and aromatic complexity.
In the cellar, the wine is made with a relatively gentle approach to extraction, including a portion of whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is then matured in older French oak barrels, allowing texture and structure to develop while keeping the focus on the Syrah’s natural fruit and spice profile.
Colour:
Deep ruby with vibrant crimson edges, showing clarity and youthful intensity.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and mulberry lead the bouquet. Layers of white pepper, coriander seed and subtle cedar add aromatic complexity.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a refined, silky texture. Fresh dark berry fruit sits alongside savoury spice and gentle herbal notes. The tannins are soft and velvety, giving the wine structure without heaviness while the acidity keeps the palate lively.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering mulberry fruit and peppery spice.

- Food Pairing : Old Road 12 Mile Syrah 2022 pairs particularly well with dishes that echo its savoury spice and medium-bodied structure. Grilled lamb chops or lamb koftas work beautifully, as the wine’s peppery character complements the richness of the meat. It also pairs well with slow-roasted pork belly or smoky braai sausages, where the wine’s fresh acidity helps balance the richness. For a vegetarian option, grilled portobello mushrooms or roasted aubergine with herbs bring out the wine’s earthy and spicy notes while keeping the pairing balanced and satisfying.
