Neil Ellis Wines has long been recognised for producing regionally expressive wines that highlight the diversity of the Cape’s growing areas. The Groenekloof Syrah comes from vineyards near Darling on the West Coast, where strong Atlantic influence and cool afternoon breezes help create a more restrained, pepper-driven expression of Syrah.
The Groenekloof ward is known for its decomposed granite soils and naturally cooler climate, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic detail. This slower ripening period contributes to the wine’s balance of dark fruit, savoury spice and lifted acidity.
Neil Ellis follows a minimalist approach in the cellar, focusing on preserving vineyard character rather than overworking the wine. Careful extraction and measured oak maturation allow texture and complexity to develop without masking the purity of the fruit. The result is a Syrah that leans towards elegance and structure rather than sheer power.

Nose:
Blackberry, blueberry and dark plum aromas are layered with cracked black pepper, violet, smoked meat and subtle fynbos notes. Gentle oak spice adds depth without dominating the wine’s aromatics.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, with finely textured tannins and vibrant acidity. Dark berry fruit sits alongside savoury spice, olive tapenade and a touch of graphite, giving the wine both freshness and complexity. The structure is firm but polished, carrying the fruit cleanly across the palate.
Finish:
Long, dry and peppery, with lingering notes of black fruit, spice and subtle earthiness.
