Muratie Ronnie Melck Family Reserve Syrah 2020
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Muratie Wine Estate sits tucked into the Knorhoek Valley on the slopes of Stellenbosch’s Simonsberg Mountain, one of South Africa’s oldest continuously worked wine farms. Dating back to the 17th century, the estate weaves deep history with hands-on viticulture and artistic heritage, under the long stewardship of the Melck family. This Syrah honours Ronnie Melck’s legacy - a passionate caretaker of Muratie whose warmth and intuitive palate shaped its style. Grown on old, low-yielding vines and vinified with traditional open fermenters, the wine sees extended maturation in French oak to marry Stellenbosch’s ripe black fruit with savoury, peppery complexity that reflects both place and personality.
Colour:
Deep ruby with violet hues, showing the intensity of a serious Syrah.
Nose:
This Syrah reveals layered aromatics of rich blackberries and dark cherries, intertwined with notes of smoked black olive, cracked black pepper, subtle bacon-like savouriness and a hint of cedar from oak.
Palate:
The palate is concentrated and structured: ripe dark fruits carry through with firm but fine-grained tannins, backed by spicy black pepper, a touch of earthy smoke and savoury umami depth. There’s a tactile richness that sits alongside lively acidity, giving both weight and poise.
Finish:
A long, expressive finish lingers with fruit intensity framed by savoury spice and fine oak, promising cellaring pleasure for years ahead.

Muratie Ronnie Melck Family Reserve Syrah 2020
- Food Pairing : The robust structure and savoury complexity of Muratie Ronnie Melck Family Reserve Syrah 2020 make it a brilliant partner for richly flavoured mains. A classic South African lamb potjie with herbs and root vegetables resonates with its pepper-tinged fruit and earthy notes, while grilled sirloin or a charred ribeye echoes the wine’s smoky depth and tannic backbone. Game dishes - think venison loin with juniper and dark berry jus - pull forward the spicy and olive-inflected character, and mature cheeses such as aged Gouda or cheddar add creamy contrast to the wine’s lively acidity and long finish.
