Mullineux Schist Syrah 2023
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
The Mullineux Schist Syrah 2023 is sourced from the Roundstone estate on the slopes of Kasteelberg in the Swartland, where ancient schist soils shape a Syrah with depth, structure and savoury complexity. Chris and Andrea Mullineux have become leading voices in terroir-driven South African wine, exploring how different Swartland soil types influence Syrah and Chenin Blanc with remarkable clarity.
The schist-rich soils of Kasteelberg naturally produce smaller berries and thicker skins, giving the wine more texture, darker fruit character and firmer tannins than its granite counterpart. Dryland farming, low yields and organic vineyard practices encourage concentration without sacrificing freshness. The grapes were hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts using whole bunches, and matured in French oak barrels and large-format foudre before bottling without fining or filtration. The result is a Syrah that feels layered and grounded, with both intensity and restraint.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple edge and excellent clarity.
Nose:
Dark berries, black cherry and plum lead the aromatics, followed by cracked black pepper, cured meat, olive tapenade and hints of bergamot, violets and warm spice. Subtle smoky and herbal notes develop with air.
Palate:
The palate is concentrated yet composed, showing ripe black and red fruit wrapped around silky but firm tannins. There is a distinct savoury edge, with schist-derived minerality bringing shape and tension. Fresh acidity keeps the wine energetic, while the texture remains polished rather than heavy.
Finish:
Long and dry, finishing with lingering spice, floral perfume, black olive and a fine mineral grip.

Mullineux Schist Syrah 2023
- Food Pairing : The Mullineux Schist Syrah 2023 pairs especially well with richly flavoured dishes that can match its savoury depth and structured tannins. Slow-braised lamb shank or Karoo lamb shoulder works beautifully with the wine’s dark fruit and peppery notes, while beef short rib or venison pie complements its earthy, mineral character. The wine also handles smoky flavours exceptionally well, making it a natural fit for flame-grilled steak or chargrilled aubergine dishes. Mature hard cheeses and mushroom-based dishes bring out the wine’s more savoury and floral nuances, particularly after some time in the glass.
