Mullineux Kloof Street Rouge 2023
Blend : Red
Description
Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines has played a defining role in shaping modern perceptions of the Swartland as one of South Africa’s most dynamic wine regions. The “Kloof Street” series takes its name from the street in Riebeek-Kasteel where Chris and Andrea Mullineux lived when they began making wine, a nod to humble beginnings and relentless curiosity. Fruit for the Rouge blend is sourced from multiple old-vine parcels across the Swartland, planted on granite, shale and schist soils that lend a mix of ripe fruit concentration, spicy lift and minerality.
Winemaking blends respect for terroir with thoughtful craft: traditional techniques such as a high proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, native yeast ferment, and ageing in seasoned French oak help preserve freshness while adding subtle texture. Entirely sustainably farmed, these vineyards reflect both place and practice in a wine that shows both balance and personality without over-extraction.
Colour:
Medium ruby with youthful vibrancy in the glass.
Nose:
Perfumed and spicy, with dark berry fruit - blackberry and cherry - lifted by violet and wild herb notes and a hint of white pepper spice.
Palate:
Medium-bodied and energetic, the palate shows juicy bramble fruit and red cherry, framed by savoury spice, subtle earthiness and fine yet supportive tannins. Each component of the blend harmonises: Cinsault brings lift and fragrance, Grenache adds bright fruit character, Tinta Barocca adds structural grip and Syrah ties it all together with depth.
Finish:
Fresh and balanced, with a lingering spiced berry impression and clean savoury notes that invite another sip.

- Food Pairing : Mullineux Kloof Street Swartland Rouge 2023’s vivid fruit profile, spice and supple structure make it a versatile partner at the table. It’s outstanding with wood-fired pizza topped with spicy salami and roasted peppers, where the bramble fruit and pepper spice resonate with rich toppings. Grilled lamb chops with a rosemary and garlic rub complement the wine’s savoury notes and balanced tannins, while Mediterranean-style roasted vegetables or a hearty lentil and herb stew bring out the wine’s aromatic complexity without overshadowing its natural freshness. The wine’s balance of fruit and savoury character means it’s equally at home with charcuterie and firm cheeses for casual gatherings.
