Mullineux Granite Syrah 2023
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Produced by Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, the Mullineux Granite Syrah 2023 comes from the Paardeberg area of the Swartland, where old bush vines grow in decomposed granite soils known for producing wines with perfume, freshness and tension. Chris and Andrea Mullineux have built their reputation on showcasing how different Swartland soils shape Syrah and Chenin Blanc, using minimal-intervention winemaking to let vineyard character lead the conversation.
Â
The Granite Syrah is sourced from a single site, Jakkalsfontein, where deep-rooted dryland vines work hard in well-drained granitic soils. The grapes were hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in large-format French oak before further ageing in foudre and bottle. The result is a Syrah that leans towards restraint and detail rather than weight - structured, aromatic and distinctly Swartland in character.
Â
Colour:
Bright ruby red with a youthful, slightly translucent edge.
Â
Nose:
Red cherries, blackberry and plum lead the aromatics, followed by violet, fynbos, white pepper and hints of olive tapenade. With time in the glass, subtle notes of Earl Grey tea, spice and crushed stone emerge.
Â
Palate:
Medium-bodied and finely textured, the palate shows remarkable purity and freshness. Red and dark berry fruit sit alongside savoury spice and a distinct granite-like minerality. The tannins are powdery and structured rather than heavy, while the acidity keeps the wine focused and energetic.
Â
Finish:
Long, dry and persistent, finishing with lingering spice, floral notes and a stony savouriness that gives the wine impressive definition.

Mullineux Granite Syrah 2023
- Food Pairing : The Mullineux Granite Syrah 2023 works beautifully with dishes that bring together savoury depth and freshness. Lamb chops on the braai with rosemary and garlic complement the wineâs herbal and peppery character, while slow-cooked beef short rib matches its fine tannin structure without overwhelming the wineâs elegance. Duck breast with cherry glaze highlights the Syrahâs floral lift and red fruit profile, and mushroom risotto brings out the earthy, mineral edge of the wine. For a local favourite, Karoo lamb with roasted vegetables feels especially well suited to the wineâs balance of concentration and restraint.
