Morgenster Estate lies on the lower slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, where decomposed granite soils, cooling maritime influence and carefully managed vineyard sites create ideal conditions for structured red blends. Since being revitalised under Giulio Bertrand, the estate has earned a reputation for producing wines inspired by the classic traditions of Bordeaux while maintaining a distinctly Stellenbosch identity.
The Lourens River Valley range reflects Morgenster’s more accessible expression of this philosophy, offering wines that combine elegance, balance and maturity without excessive weight. The 2016 vintage benefited from concentrated fruit and careful oak integration, with the blend matured in French oak barrels to build texture and complexity while preserving freshness and varietal definition. The result is a wine that shows both refinement and approachability, shaped by Stellenbosch terroir and classical winemaking principles.
Colour:
Deep ruby with garnet edges beginning to show gentle development.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry are followed by notes of cedarwood, dried herbs, tobacco leaf and subtle graphite.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a composed, structured palate. Dark berry fruit sits alongside savoury notes of cocoa, spice and earthy complexity, while balanced acidity keeps the wine focused and fresh. Oak maturation adds polish and texture without dominating the fruit profile.
Finish:
Long and dry, with lingering cassis, cedar spice and a gentle savoury note on the finish.
