Morgenster Estate Reserve Red 2016

Morgenster Estate is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, where decomposed granite soils, cooling sea breezes from False Bay and carefully selected vineyard sites create ideal conditions for structured, age-worthy red wines. Under the guidance of Giulio Bertrand, the estate became known for producing Bordeaux-inspired blends that combine Old World restraint with the ripeness and clarity of Stellenbosch fruit.

Estate Reserve Red represents Morgenster’s flagship red blend and reflects a meticulous approach both in the vineyard and cellar. The 2016 vintage was shaped by low yields and concentrated fruit, resulting in a wine with depth, structure and longevity. Individual components were matured in French oak barrels before blending, allowing each variety to contribute complexity, texture and balance to the final wine. The style remains focused on elegance and detail rather than sheer power, with bottle maturation already adding further refinement to the wine.

Colour:
Deep garnet red with slight brick-red evolution at the rim.

Nose:
Complex aromas of cassis, black plum and dark cherry are layered with cedarwood, cigar box, graphite, dried herbs and subtle earthy spice.

Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with polished tannins and impressive depth. Concentrated dark fruit flavours are balanced by savoury notes of tobacco leaf, cocoa and pencil shavings, while vibrant acidity keeps the palate focused and composed. Oak integration is seamless, adding texture and complexity without overshadowing the fruit.

Finish:
Long, dry and elegant, with lingering cassis, cedar spice and mineral savouriness carrying through the finish.
