Monks Mary Jane Gin 50ml
Gin
Description
Produced by Monks Distillery in the Breede Valley, Monks Mary Jane Gin reflects the distillery’s adventurous, small-batch approach to contemporary South African gin. Built as South Africa’s first off-grid distillery, Monks combines traditional copper pot distillation with botanicals inspired by the surrounding Cape landscape and indigenous flora.
Mary Jane became notable as South Africa’s first hemp-infused gin, incorporating hemp alongside local botanicals such as slangbos and renosterbos. The gin is handcrafted in small batches using crystal-clear mountain water and a classic juniper-forward base, while the botanical selection adds an earthy, herbaceous complexity that sets it apart from more conventional dry gins.
Despite its unconventional inspiration, the style remains polished and balanced rather than novelty-driven, offering a distinctly modern Cape craft gin profile with freshness, savoury depth and subtle citrus lift.
Colour:
Crystal clear with bright brilliance.
Nose:
Classic juniper and citrus peel lead initially, followed by soft herbal aromas, fynbos, cracked black pepper and subtle earthy hemp notes. There is a gentle floral freshness beneath the savoury character.
Palate:
Smooth and rounded with a soft mouthfeel. Earthy botanicals and herbaceous spice sit alongside orange zest, coriander and delicate citrus sweetness. The hemp infusion adds texture and depth without dominating the palate, while the juniper backbone keeps the style clean and structured.
Finish:
Long, dry and fragrant, with lingering pepper spice, fresh herbs and subtle sweet citrus notes.

- Food Pairing : Monks Mary Jane Gin pairs particularly well with flavourful dishes that can handle its earthy, herbaceous profile. Try it with grilled lamb skewers, smoky braai chicken or chargrilled mushrooms, where the savoury botanicals and peppery finish complement the richness of the food beautifully. It also works well alongside mature cheeses, biltong or spicy Mexican-inspired dishes with lime and coriander. For a lighter option, serve it with tonic and fresh citrus alongside sushi or tempura seafood, allowing the gin’s citrus and fynbos notes to stay fresh and expressive.
