Meerendal Estate Shiraz 2023 (Diners)
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Just 20 minutes from Cape Town, Meerendal Wine Estate sits on the rolling hills of the Durbanville wine region, where cooling Atlantic breezes temper the Cape’s warm sunshine. This maritime influence slows ripening, allowing grapes to develop flavour while retaining freshness - a hallmark of Durbanville reds.
Established in 1702, Meerendal is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms. The estate’s vineyards are planted on slopes of decomposed granite and Oakleaf soils that encourage good drainage and naturally balanced vine growth. Today the winemaking team focuses on translating this historic site into modern, expressive wines - combining careful vineyard management with a cellar approach that prioritises purity of fruit and gentle oak integration.
The result is wines that feel grounded in place: approachable, structured and clearly reflective of Durbanville’s cooler-climate character.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple edge, indicating a fresh vintage and vibrant fruit.
Nose:
Aromatic notes of ripe blackberry and dark plum lead the way, followed by cracked black pepper, subtle violet and a touch of smoky oak.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with juicy black fruit at the core. The tannins are firm but polished, giving structure without heaviness. Hints of spice, dark cherry and savoury notes add complexity while the Durbanville freshness keeps the wine lively.
Finish:
Smooth and moderately long, with lingering dark fruit and a gentle peppery warmth typical of Shiraz.

- Food Pairing : The structure and spice of Meerendal Estate Shiraz 2023 make it a versatile partner for hearty, flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled lamb chops, where the wine’s peppery character mirrors the savoury richness of the meat. A slow-cooked beef stew or oxtail works equally well, as the wine’s tannins help cut through the richness. For something simpler, try it with a wood-fired boerewors roll or smoky barbecue ribs - the dark fruit and subtle spice complement charred, caramelised flavours beautifully.
