Meerendal Estate Pinot Noir 2023 (Diners)
Pinot Noir
Description
Meerendal Wine Estate is one of the historic wine farms of the Durbanville region, with viticultural roots dating back to the early 1700s. Situated just outside Cape Town, the estate benefits from a Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling Atlantic influences. The prevailing south-easterly winds and frequent ocean mists help slow ripening, which is particularly valuable for delicate varieties such as Pinot Noir.
The Meerendal Estate Pinot Noir 2023 comes from a single vineyard on the mid-slopes of Dorstberg Mountain. These elevated sites allow the vines to benefit from both cooling breezes and well-drained soils, supporting balanced ripening and preserving natural acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in open tanks with regular punch-downs to gently extract colour and flavour. The wine is then matured for around nine months in French oak barrels, using a mix of new and older oak to add subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Colour:
Bright ruby red with youthful clarity, reflecting the lighter, elegant style typical of Pinot Noir.
Nose:
Red berry aromas lead the nose, particularly raspberry and cherry, followed by delicate floral notes and a light touch of oak spice.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with fresh red fruit flavours of cherry and raspberry. The texture is smooth and supple, with silky tannins and lively acidity providing balance and lift. Subtle oak influence adds gentle spice and depth while keeping the fruit at the forefront.
Finish:
Graceful and lingering, with soft berry fruit and a faint savoury note that adds complexity.

- Food Pairing : The freshness and silky tannins of Meerendal Estate Pinot Noir 2023 make it particularly versatile at the table. It pairs well with roasted duck or herb-rubbed chicken, where the wine’s red berry fruit complements the savoury richness of the meat. A mushroom risotto or grilled portobello mushrooms work equally well, as the earthy flavours echo Pinot Noir’s subtle savoury notes. For something lighter, seared tuna or salmon offers a good balance, with the wine’s acidity cutting through the richness while maintaining a gentle, elegant pairing.
