Meerendal Estate Merlot 2023 (Diners)
Merlot
Description
Meerendal Wine Estate, situated in the rolling hills of the Durbanville Wine Valley just north of Cape Town, is one of the region’s oldest working wine farms. Established in 1702, the estate has more than three centuries of farming and viticultural heritage, with vineyards planted across cool slopes that benefit from steady Atlantic breezes.
These cooling maritime influences help grapes ripen slowly, preserving natural acidity and allowing for balanced flavour development - a hallmark of many Durbanville wines. At Meerendal, vineyard management and careful cellar work aim to express this cool-climate character while maintaining approachability and structure.
The Meerendal Estate Merlot 2023 comes from estate vineyards and is fermented using traditional techniques before maturing in French oak barrels for around 12 months, allowing the wine to gain texture and subtle complexity while keeping Merlot’s natural fruit character at the forefront.

- Food Pairing : The supple tannins and ripe fruit profile of Meerendal Estate Merlot 2023 make it a versatile partner for a range of comforting dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled beef burgers or a classic steak, where the wine’s soft structure complements the richness of the meat. Roast chicken with herbs or slow-cooked lamb works equally well, as the wine’s plum and cherry flavours echo the savoury depth of the dish. For a vegetarian option, try it with mushroom risotto or roasted aubergine - the earthy flavours bring out the Merlot’s subtle oak and dark fruit character.
