Luddite Shiraz 2021
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Luddite Wines, founded by Niels and Penny Verburg, sits high on the hills above Bot River in the Walker Bay region. The vineyards benefit from cooling maritime influences from the nearby Atlantic, along with shale and clay soils that help retain moisture in this dry but temperate landscape. These conditions allow Shiraz to ripen slowly while maintaining natural acidity and aromatic detail.
True to its name, Luddite embraces a deliberately traditional, hands-on approach to winemaking. Grapes are harvested by hand from estate vineyards and fermented in small batches, including a portion in open fermenters to build structure and texture. After fermentation, the wine spends around two years maturing in French oak, with only a modest portion of new barrels. A small addition of Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon is blended in to add depth and mid-palate weight, while the focus remains firmly on expressing Bot River Shiraz with minimal intervention.
Colour:
Deep crimson with a vivid ruby edge, showing brightness and concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Lifted aromatics of violets, rose petals and Turkish delight lead the bouquet, followed by red cherry, raspberry and subtle hints of spice, liquorice and savoury herbs.
Palate:
The palate opens with juicy red fruit - cranberry, redcurrant and cherry - layered with clove and liquorice spice. Firm but refined tannins provide structure, while fresh acidity keeps the wine energetic and focused.
Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering red fruit, savoury spice and a faint saline note that reflects the Bot River terroir.

Luddite Shiraz 2021
- Food Pairing : The spice-driven character and firm structure of Luddite Shiraz 2021 make it a natural partner for richly flavoured dishes. It works beautifully with Karoo lamb chops on the braai, where the savoury meat and smoky char echo the wine’s peppery spice. A slow-cooked beef brisket or oxtail stew also suits the wine’s depth and tannin structure. For something slightly lighter, try it with grilled aubergine and roasted vegetables, or a mushroom risotto - dishes that complement the wine’s earthy and savoury notes while allowing its bright red fruit to shine.
