L’Ormarins forms part of the Anthonij Rupert Wyne portfolio in Franschhoek and has become one of South Africa’s leading Cap Classique producers. The Private Cuvée range represents the pinnacle of the estate’s sparkling wine production, focusing on extended lees ageing, site expression and classical méthode Cap Classique craftsmanship.
Fruit for the 2017 vintage was sourced primarily from the cool, isolated valley of Elandskloof near Villiersdorp. Surrounded by mountains and planted on decomposed shale and sandstone soils, the vineyards benefit from a distinctly cool continental climate that helps preserve acidity and aromatic precision. These conditions are particularly valuable for premium sparkling wine production.
The wine was crafted using whole-bunch pressing, with a portion fermented in barrel for added texture and depth. After secondary fermentation in bottle, the wine spent an impressive 93 months on the lees before disgorgement, developing complexity while retaining remarkable freshness and energy.
Colour:
Bright pale gold with a persistent stream of fine, energetic bubbles.
Nose:
Aromas of lemon zest, green apple and citrus blossom lead the nose, followed by layers of sourdough bread, brioche, oyster shell and fresh sea breeze.
Palate:
Taut and focused on entry, with vivid citrus freshness and crisp acidity balanced by creamy lees texture. Notes of lemon sherbet, grapefruit and green apple are complemented by savoury maritime nuances and subtle biscuit richness from extended maturation on the lees.
Finish:
Long, dry and elegant, with lingering citrus, toasted brioche and saline minerality.
