Description
Situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain in Stellenbosch, Le Bonheur is one of the Cape’s historic wine estates, with roots tracing back to the late 1700s. The estate’s vineyards benefit from varied aspects and elevations between 200 and 400 metres above sea level, allowing different cultivars to ripen with both concentration and freshness. The combination of Hutton, Tukulu, Klapmuts and Kroonstad soils contributes structure, depth, and aromatic complexity to the wines.
Le Bonheur Prima 2021 reflects the estate’s classical Stellenbosch style while taking a slightly unconventional direction in its varietal composition. Led predominantly by Petit Verdot, the wine is layered and structured, yet polished rather than heavy. Hand-harvesting, separate vineyard vinification, and 18 months of maturation in French oak barrels all contribute to the wine’s texture and refinement without overshadowing the fruit. The cooler 2021 vintage brought freshness and fine tannin definition, resulting in a blend that feels composed and expressive.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with a dense, youthful core and bright garnet edge.
Nose:
Raspberries, blackcurrant and ripe cherries lead the aromatics, followed by subtle dried herbs, cedar, cigar box and pencil shavings. Gentle oak spice adds notes of vanilla and clove in the background.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, with a smooth but structured palate built around fine-grained tannins. Dark berry fruit and ripe plum flavours are layered with savoury tobacco notes and a graphite-like minerality. The wine carries richness without becoming overly weighty, helped by balanced acidity and restrained oak integration.
Finish:
Long and polished, finishing with lingering black fruit, subtle spice, and dry herbal complexity.
