Description
La Motte’s Pierneef Collection honours South African landscape artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef and is made on the Franschhoek estate that has long combined careful viticulture with a strong respect for site and tradition. For the Pierneef Atelier Syrah‑Viognier, La Motte sources Syrah from cool Elim vineyards and the Viognier from Franschhoek, then co‑ferments selected parcels to capture perfume and finesse rather than overt power. Hand sorting, careful ferment temperature control and extended maturation in 300‑litre French oak are used to marry Syrah’s spice and structure with Viognier’s floral lift. The resulting style is crafted, varietal and food‑friendly rather than showy.
Colour:
Medium ruby with a clear core and youthful tint.
Nose:
Lifted floral notes of rose petal and violet sit over ripe red and dark berry aromas. Eastern spice and a perfume of white pepper emerge alongside subtle oak spice and a savoury, slightly cured‑meat note.
Palate:
Medium bodied with a soft, rounded mid‑palate. Red cherry and plum are supported by fine tannins and a gentle line of acidity. Co‑fermented Viognier lends aromatic lift while the Syrah brings peppery spice, liquorice and a savoury undercurrent that keeps the fruit honest. Oak is present but integrated after 24 months’ barrel ageing.
Finish:
Medium to long, finishing on spiced red fruit, a hint of cured‑meat savouriness and lingering peppercorn notes.
