La Cave Chenin Blanc 2024
Chenin Blanc
Description
La Cave Chenin Blanc 2024 is produced by Wellington Wines, a long-standing co-operative rooted in the Wellington region, known for its concentration of old vine Chenin Blanc. While labelled as Western Cape, the wine draws heavily from this area, where warm days and cooling evening breezes allow for full ripeness while retaining freshness.
The La Cave range represents a more focused, small-batch tier within Wellington Wines, built around carefully selected parcels - often from Certified Heritage Vineyards planted in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These older vines naturally produce lower yields and greater flavour concentration, giving the wine more depth than typical entry-level Chenin Blanc.
Winemaking leans towards texture and subtle complexity, with fermentation and maturation in oak playing a supporting role rather than dominating. The result is a Chenin Blanc that balances fruit purity with a gentle, rounded structure - offering a step up in detail while remaining accessible.
Colour:
Pale straw with a soft golden tint, hinting at a touch of oak influence.
Nose:
Ripe pear and yellow apple lead, followed by hints of peach and a light honeyed note. Subtle vanilla and toasted almond add quiet depth.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a rounded, slightly creamy texture balanced by fresh acidity. Orchard fruit and soft stone fruit flavours are supported by a gentle oak framework, giving the wine more weight and structure than a purely stainless-steel style.
Finish:
Smooth and dry, with lingering apple, citrus, and a faint nutty note.

- Food Pairing : La Cave Chenin Blanc 2024 pairs well with dishes that echo its added texture and gentle richness. Roast chicken or pork works particularly well, as the wine’s structure complements the savoury depth. Creamy pastas or mushroom dishes bring out its subtle oak character, while grilled fish or prawns with lemon butter keep the pairing fresh and balanced. It’s also a good match for mildly spiced Cape Malay dishes, where the fruit softens the spice without overwhelming it.
