Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage 2021
Pinotage
Description
At the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains in Stellenbosch, Kanonkop Wine Estate stands as one of South Africa’s most respected family-run wineries, with a legacy deeply rooted in meticulous viticulture and expressive reds. The Black Label vineyard, planted in 1953 on decomposed granite and Hutton soils, is an iconic block yielding tiny, concentrated Pinotage berries that reflect this cool-climate site’s natural energy. Under the guidance of acclaimed winemakers, Kanonkop combines traditional techniques - like open-top fermentation and extended French oak maturation - with careful attention to site and vine age, crafting wines that are powerful yet poised.
Colour: Deep, opaque ruby-purple, almost inky at the rim, hinting at intensity within.
Nose: The aromatics are compelling and layered - ripe black cherries and cassis at the forefront, woven with notes of dark chocolate, vanilla spice, tobacco leaf and a touch of espresso-like earthiness.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with succulent fruit core and fresh acidity that lifts the dense flavours. The tannins are firm and well-integrated, giving structure without harshness, while hints of liquorice, wild berry and subtle spice follow through with poise.
Finish: Long, dry and focused, with a persistent echo of dark fruit and refined oak lending a seamless and polished closing impression.

- Food Pairing : Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage 2021’s savoury depth and fresh acidity make it an excellent partner for richly flavoured dishes. A slow-roasted Karoo lamb shoulder with herb jus echoes the wine’s dark fruit and earthy spice, while a hearty beef pot-au-feu with root vegetables matches its texture and tannin structure. For a South African twist, try venison sosatie with apricot glaze - the sweet-savoury interplay resonates with the wine’s nuanced oak and fruit layers. Even a grilled tuna steak with cracked pepper and olive tapenade will harmonise with the wine’s robust profile, balancing richness and freshness on the palate.
