Journey’s End Vineyards sits on the south-facing slopes of the Schapenberg within the Helderberg ward of Stellenbosch, an area strongly influenced by maritime breezes from nearby False Bay. These cooling winds - locally known as the Cape Doctor - help moderate the warm Stellenbosch climate, allowing varieties like Cabernet Franc to ripen slowly while maintaining freshness and aromatic precision.
The estate was revitalised in the mid-1990s by the Gabb family, who focused on replanting vineyards and developing a modern cellar designed to emphasise site expression. Granite-rich soils and elevated vineyard blocks around 180 metres above sea level encourage concentration while preserving structure in the fruit.
For the Journey’s End V5 Cabernet Franc 2021, grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in open-top casks to allow gentle extraction. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for around 14 months in French oak barrels, helping integrate tannins and develop subtle spice complexity while preserving the varietal’s aromatic lift.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright crimson edge, showing good clarity and youthful concentration.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of ripe cherry and raspberry lead, followed by savoury notes of olive, wild fynbos and a touch of violet. Gentle cinnamon and oak spice add depth as the wine opens.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with lively freshness. Red berry fruit and cranberry are supported by savoury herbal notes and subtle mineral tension. The tannins are fine and powdery, giving structure without heaviness.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering red fruit, coastal herb notes and a delicate peppery spice.
