Joostenberg Estate Bakermat 2021
Bordeaux Blend
Description
Joostenberg Estate is situated between Paarl and Stellenbosch on the lower slopes of the Tygerberg, where dryland farming, decomposed granite soils and warm Mediterranean conditions help produce concentrated yet balanced fruit. The Myburgh family has farmed the property for generations, focusing on environmentally conscious viticulture and low-intervention winemaking that allows vineyard character to remain central to the wines.
Â
Bakermat, meaning âcradleâ in Afrikaans, reflects Joostenbergâs philosophy of blending Mediterranean varieties that are naturally suited to the Cape climate. The 2021 vintage combines Shiraz, MourvĂšdre, Touriga Nacional and Grenache to create a wine that leans towards a RhĂŽne-inspired style while still feeling unmistakably South African. Fermentation with minimal intervention and careful oak maturation preserve freshness, savoury detail and texture rather than emphasising excessive ripeness or heavy oak influence.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby red with bright crimson highlights.
Â
Nose:
Aromatic notes of red plum, blackberry and cherry are layered with black pepper, dried herbs, fynbos and subtle floral lift. Gentle hints of smoked meat and spice add further complexity.
Â
Palate:
Medium-bodied and textured, with supple tannins and lively acidity carrying flavours of dark berries, sour cherry and savoury spice across the palate. MourvĂšdre and Touriga Nacional add earthy depth and structure, while Grenache brings freshness and vibrancy to the blend.
Â
Finish:
Dry and persistent, with lingering spice, red fruit and a subtle mineral edge on the finish.
