Imbuko Van Zijl Reserve Blue Ink 2021 (FWA)
Blend : Red
Description
Imbuko Wines is based at Uitkyk Farm in Wellington, a historic wine-growing area known for warm days, cooling mountain breezes and diverse soils well suited to structured red wines. The region’s climate allows grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to ripen fully while maintaining enough natural acidity to preserve balance and longevity.
The Van Zijl range honours the family heritage behind Imbuko Wines, reflecting a tradition of collaboration between generations of winemakers. The Reserve Blue Ink label draws its inspiration from the old custom of signing important documents in blue ink - a nod to legacy and authenticity. The wine itself mirrors that symbolism with its deep colour and bold structure.
Imbuko Van Zijl Reserve Blue Ink 2021 is matured in French oak, adding subtle smoky complexity and integrating the tannins while preserving the dark fruit character of the blend. The result is a wine that balances Wellington’s ripe fruit expression with a measured, classical structure.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense, almost inky core, reflecting the wine’s concentrated fruit and oak structure.
Nose:
Blackcurrant and ripe red berries lead the aromatics, followed by hints of dark plum, gentle spice and smoky oak.
Palate:
Full-bodied and fruit-driven with flavours of blackcurrant, red cherry and plum. Firm tannins provide structure, while French oak maturation adds notes of toasted wood and subtle spice.
Finish:
Lingering and savoury, with dark fruit and a light smoky note carrying through the finish.

- Food Pairing : The structure and dark fruit profile of Imbuko Van Zijl Reserve Blue Ink 2021 make it a natural partner for richer savoury dishes. It pairs well with grilled Karoo lamb chops or roast beef, where the wine’s tannins complement the protein and its fruit balances the savoury flavours. Slow-braised venison or beef stew also works beautifully, allowing the wine’s depth and oak spice to mirror the richness of the dish. For a simpler pairing, mature cheddar or a well-aged gouda highlights the wine’s fruit intensity while softening its tannins.
