The estate’s vineyards benefit from decomposed granite soils and cooling sea breezes drifting in from nearby False Bay - conditions that help retain acidity while allowing red varieties to ripen fully.
The philosophy at Idiom is to craft wines that honour classic Old-World styles while embracing the fruit clarity typical of the Cape. Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux partners perform particularly well on the Helderberg slopes, where warm afternoons and cooler evenings help develop both structure and aromatic complexity.
The Idiom Bordicon 2019 reflects this balance. Crafted as a Bordeaux-inspired blend, the wine is matured in French oak barrels to integrate tannins and build depth, while careful blending ensures that each varietal contributes to the wine’s structure, perfume and longevity.
Colour:
Deep garnet with a dense, almost opaque core and a ruby rim.
Nose:
Blackcurrant and ripe plum dominate the aromatics, followed by cedar, graphite and subtle notes of tobacco leaf. Hints of dried herbs and dark chocolate add further complexity.
Palate:
Full-bodied with a firm but polished structure. Dark berry fruit - cassis, blackberry and plum - sits alongside savoury elements of cedar and spice. Fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity provide shape and tension without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Long and structured, with lingering cassis, dark chocolate and a touch of oak spice.
