Holden Manz Syrah 2021
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Holden Manz Wine Estate sits tucked into Franschhoek Valley’s dramatic slopes, where Mediterranean climate and varied soils help craft expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Syrah 2021 was harvested later than normal due to a cool growing season - resulting in grapes with good acidity and balanced phenolics - then fermented with wild yeasts (including ~20 % whole cluster) and aged for 25 months in French oak barrels. This thoughtful approach emphasises complexity and nuance: the vines’ varied parcels and meticulous sorting translate into a Syrah that marries freshness with savoury depth, expressing both grape and place in a refined yet inviting style.
Colour:
Deep ruby with youthful, luminous edges - a classic Syrah look.
Nose:
Enticing aromas of dark plum, black cherry and bramble fruit are lifted with peppery spice, subtle violets and a hint of earthy herb that adds intrigue.
Palate:
Medium- to medium-full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit core, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. The palate displays layers of blueberry, blackcurrant and pepper spice, with savoury nuance and hints of cinnamon and nutmeg revealing depth without heaviness.
Finish:
Balanced and lingering, the finish brings fresh acidity back to the fore with spice and dark fruit echoing through the last sip - inviting further exploration.

Holden Manz Syrah 2021
- Food Pairing : Holden Manz Syrah 2021 is a supple yet structured red that pairs beautifully with hearty grilled meats such as pepper-crusted lamb chops or charred ribeye steak, where its peppery spice and dark fruit depth enhance savoury richness. The wine’s fresh acidity makes it a great match for slow-braised beef or oxtail potjie, balancing rich, gelatinous textures and layered flavours. For a slightly lighter pairing, rustic tomato-based pasta dishes or mushroom-and-black olive ragù highlight its savoury, herb-tinged profile without overwhelming the palate.
- Drink before: Drink now–202. Approachable in its youth yet capable of graceful development over a few more years.
