Holden Manz Big G 2021
Bordeaux Blend
Description
Situated on the upper slopes of the Franschhoek Valley, Holden Manz Wine Estate benefits from a unique pocket of terroir shaped by mountain breezes, well-drained alluvial soils and a slightly cooler microclimate than much of the valley floor. These conditions allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness - an important factor for Rhône varieties such as Grenache.
The estate was founded by Gerard Holden and Wendy Manz, with a clear focus on small-lot winemaking and vineyard expression. Today the wines are crafted with a philosophy that balances Old World restraint with New World clarity of fruit. Hand harvesting, careful berry selection and measured oak use ensure that the character of each vineyard block remains central.
The Holden Manz Big G 2021 reflects this approach particularly well. Made from carefully selected Grenache fruit, it is fermented gently and matured in seasoned French oak to preserve aromatics and texture rather than add overt oak influence. The result is a wine that leans toward elegance rather than power - a style increasingly associated with the best modern South African Grenache.
Colour:
Translucent ruby with a bright crimson rim, typical of Grenache’s naturally lighter pigment.
Nose:
Red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry lead the aromatics, followed by hints of dried rose petal, white pepper and subtle fynbos. A gentle savoury note and light spice develop as the wine opens.
Palate:
Medium-bodied and finely textured. Juicy red berry fruit carries through the palate, supported by soft, powdery tannins and fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively. Notes of cranberry, red plum and delicate spice add complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, leaving impressions of red berries, dried herbs and a touch of savoury spice.

Holden Manz Big G 2021
- Food Pairing : The lively acidity and gentle tannins of Holden Manz Big G 2021 make it a versatile partner for flavourful but not overly heavy dishes. It pairs particularly well with herb-roasted Karoo lamb or grilled lamb cutlets, where the wine’s red fruit and savoury spice echo the richness of the meat. Roast duck with a cherry or plum glaze also works beautifully, as the bright fruit in the wine complements the sweet-savory flavours. For something lighter, try it with mushroom risotto or chargrilled aubergine - dishes where earthy notes and soft textures match the wine’s elegant structure.
