Highlands Road Chardonnay 2020 (FWA)
Chardonnay
Description
Highlands Road Estate is situated in the cool, elevated Elgin Valley, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most distinctive regions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Originally a fruit farm purchased in 2004 by owner Michael White, the property was gradually transformed into a boutique wine estate, with the first vintage released in 2007.
Elgin’s high altitude, frequent cloud cover and maritime influence create one of the coolest viticultural climates in the Cape. These conditions allow grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and developing layered aromatics rather than overt richness. Highlands Road embraces this naturally elegant style, focusing on wines that show clarity of fruit, freshness and a fine mineral line typical of the region.
The Highlands Road Chardonnay 2020 reflects this philosophy, combining cool-climate citrus fruit with carefully judged French oak maturation to add texture without overwhelming the wine’s natural precision.
Colour:
Bright pale gold with youthful clarity.
Nose:
Fresh aromas of lemon peel, grapefruit zest and green apple lead the bouquet, followed by subtle notes of honeysuckle, cream and lightly toasted oak.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a smooth, layered texture. Citrus and stone-fruit flavours are supported by a gentle creaminess from oak ageing, while Elgin’s natural acidity keeps the wine focused and energetic.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering citrus zest and a delicate toasted almond note.

- Food Pairing : The freshness and subtle oak structure of Highlands Road Chardonnay 2020 make it well suited to a wide range of dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled line fish or butter-poached prawns, where the citrus notes mirror the brightness of seafood. Roast chicken with herbs or a creamy mushroom risotto also works beautifully, as the wine’s acidity cuts through richer textures while its gentle oak complements savoury flavours. For a simple option, try it alongside a soft-rind cheese such as Brie or Camembert, where the wine’s balance of freshness and texture comes into its own.
