Hartenberg Wine Estate sits on the free-draining slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms with roots stretching back to 1692. Today owned and farmed by the Mackenzie family, Hartenberg practices regenerative viticulture - working with nature to enhance soil health, biodiversity and vineyard resilience while honouring traditional winemaking craft. The Mackenzie 2017 is a classic estate Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted to express both power and finesse from this storied terroir.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a garnet edge, showing both youth and early development.
Nose:
A refined bouquet of cassis and dark plum supported by tobacco leaf, forest floor and bay leaf; underpinned by cedar and gentle oak spice.
Palate:
Medium-full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit - blackcurrant, plum and hints of earthiness - framed by bright acidity and finely grained tannins. There’s a savoury backbone of tobacco and herbal complexity, giving excellent structure and depth.
Finish:
Long and dry with lingering dark fruit and savoury spice, urging another sip.
